Former President Donald Trump has asserted that American forces hit a "significant plant" in the South American country recently. But, the former president did not specify the exact nature or location of the strike, and officials have issued no further clarification from his administration.
Unspecific Remarks Made During a Radio Show
"We just knocked out – I'm not sure if you heard – they have a large facility, where the vessels originate. Recently, we destroyed it. So we hit them decisively," Trump allegedly told Republican donor and supermarket owner John Catsimatidis on Friday.
Possible Implications of a Confirmed Attack
If a US military action is verified, it would mark the initial land strike since the Pentagon began a expansion of US military presence in the Caribbean region to disrupt drug traffickers that the former administration asserts operate under the orders of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
This original objective of the military buildup has evolved into a quarantine aimed at disrupting the nation's oil exports.
Social Media Video and Administration Statements
Trump has for some time indicated that American military units are ready to widen the military campaign by attacking objectives within Venezuela, a strategy that would in theory require congressional approval.
Online video circulated on social media on 24 December purportedly showed an explosion said to be from an industrial area in a Venezuelan state. However, the video or the site in question has not been independently verified.
An official from Trump's team allegedly informed a media outlet that the former president was describing a narco-trafficking site in his remarks.
Response and Current Military Posture
The Venezuelan government has remained silent on the alleged strike the former president referenced. Additionally, there have been no independent reports from Venezuela about it.
The deployment of American forces in the region – a posture certain officials have referred to as a maritime "quarantine" – marks the most expansive naval operation of his time in office.
Administration officials have avoided from describing the action as a full blockade, but have confirmed that around 15,000 service members are positioned across the Caribbean and the Gulf, including a carrier strike group, F-35 aircraft, and law enforcement vessels to implement existing economic sanctions.
